THE STORY

Hey ya’ll! So we’re talking tuna! It’s one of my favorite keto snacks and even before I was a low carb lover I have been obsessed. I mean, I was the kid that definitely would eat tuna at lunch and, to be honest, I don’t know how I had any friends! It’s not the most pleasant thing to bring if it gets warm, but I also had a cooler pack, so the smell was fine. As I got older, I found the sandwich shops with the best tuna salad and the restaurants with the best tuna melts. But there is nothing like your own recipe that has just the right amount of everything you want. Enter this recipe. I actually made this on my IG stories one day while I was baking something else. I got so many DMs (I mean, like over 100) just about his recipe alone! I wasn’t planning on posting it, because I honestly thought everyone made their tuna similarly. Well, I was wrong!

All of the big ingredients in a a bowl ready to be mixed. Spices added after this!

THE DEETS

This recipe is really simple. I generally always make 2 cans of tuna at a time because it can go quickly. It’s naturally low carb, low calorie and low fat, so indulging isn’t going to hurt you. I also swear by Duke’s Mayo. I don’t know about you, but I’m funny about mayonnaise as it is and I really don’t like a lot of brands. For me, Duke’s does it. It gives dishes a great flavor and is keto and whole30 compliant because it is sugar free. And for the price point, it’s one of the few brands that do! I also like to use dill pickles here, but use what you like. Sweetness in my tuna is not something I prefer normally. I do have one recipe that uses a little sweet relish for balance. The dill relish adds the sourness that cuts through the fat of the mayo and olive oil and stands up to the spices. The other key here is the mustard. While you can use plain yellow mustard, dijon mustard is actually what I like to use. It provides sharpness of yellow mustard, but gives a much more complex flavor to the finished tuna. Don’t worry though, I use yellow mustard when I need to, like the photos in this post! Once it’s ready, I am a fan of this in many ways. I love it served with just keto crackers, with celery, in a collard green wrap and of course on my keto mug bread! Most recently, I made a low carb tuna melt using Cut Da Carb flat breads and it was EVERYTHING! Check out the video and recipe for that here!

Cut Da Carb chips here. This flatbread is so versatile. It can do anything!

TIPS FOR MAKING

As always, I want to leave you with a few tips for making the best version of this tuna salad. Remember, the measurements are the baseline, but feel free to add more or less of anything and even switch it up with new items. It’s your tuna now!

  • If using tuna in water, drain the can of tuna completely. Tuna that is too wet will result in a really gloopy end product and no one likes gloopy tuna!
  • The kinda of tuna you choose will determine your end result. For a white tuna, make sure you choose “chunk white” tuna. For a smoother mix without regard to color, you can do chunk light.
  • If you can avoid it, do not skip the chill period. it allows the flavors to meld and really come together. It also allows the tuna to absorb the liquid so that it’s not too runny!

That’s all I’ve got for ya’ll for this really simple, but delicious tuna salad. Go forth and prosper at lunch time, at snack time…shoot, anytime is a good time for tuna!
