Oh?! What’s that? I’m back again this week with another apple recipe? Well, of course I am! It’s fall ya’ll! It’s also apple month here at LizeeAngel and I am so excited about it. I’m really proud of this one in particular because it’s a new take on a dish I already love and have a quick recipe for. It’s fried apples! Now, in this case, the apples aren’t fried in the way you think with batter and lots of oil, these apples are sautéed down to get a divine texture and flavor that can be put on anything! I’ve kinda already given you my inspo here, so let’s just get into the details! Oh yeah, THERE’S A VIDEO!!

Look at these apples and the delicious sauce. Go straight from the pan to a luscious bowl of butter pecan ice cream. Yum!

THE DEETS

So this recipe is super simple, which is why I love it so much. With a few flavor upgrades like five spice powder and caramel extract, these apples bring you a flavor you didn’t even know you wanted. I always select two different varieties of apples. This makes the end result versatile in both flavor and texture. For me personally, that is a combination of granny smith and honeycrisp apples work great. Granny Smiths are notorious for being the apple of choice when it comes to baked goods, such as apple pie and apple dumplings. They are tart and give a really good contrasting flavor in dishes that typically have a lot of sugar. Honeycrisp apples on the other hand are much sweeter and have an almost crispy texture. I love this because not only does it minimize the amount of sugar you need to get a good sweetness level. Now for the star of the show, Chinese five spice! Chinese Five Spice powder is generally made up of Chinese cinnamon, fennel, star anise cloves and Sichuan peppercorns. Sometimes there are more spices included and even a different combo of 5. I love this blend because it brings such a unique flavor profile to the dishes you make. I particularly enjoy it in desserts as it brings more depth and interesting flavors to things that can be pretty ordinary. Like adding a little to your buttercream on a vanilla cupcake, or to your caramel before you make a sundae. There’s so many possibilities.

These apples pair work with so many dishes. Over ice cream (I suggest butter pecan for an out of this world experience), in baked goods, like pie and apple turnovers, and even with savory dishes, spooned over a seared piece of pork. Let me give you the tips so you can make this today…even if you’re reading this at 11:00P, don’t wait! Lol

TIPS FOR MAKING

This recipe requires 4 pieces of equipment and only 6 ingredients and is ready in about 15 minutes, so it’s super simple and easy to half or double (or triple for that matter). But of course I have a tip or two for you to make the best fried apples of your dreams:

  • Cut your apples into even pieces. It will help them cook evenly so that none are too soft or too hard in the end.
  • Be sure to cook your apples over medium heat so that you don’t burn the sugar. If it becomes burnt, it will make the entire dish taste bitter.
  • Store in a bowl with a tight lid. Reheat gently in bursts of 10-20 seconds so that you don’t over cook the sauce and it becomes too hard when it cools.

That is the end of this recipe, but be sure to check out the video for this one, along with the apple butter recipe. For the next recipe we’ll be making something really special and you’ll want to have both ingredients on deck!
