Hey ya’ll! I’m back with a spectacular new recipe. From the title you can see that it’s BBQ sauce, which if you know me, know I LOVE!! I am not a ketchup fan, it’s too sweet and for me and kinda has a weird taste. I don’t care, I don’t care! I know some of you guys love it and that’s ok. But you will not make me a ketchup convert! The only time I usually use it is when I make BBQ sauce as a base. Because it already has a lot of sugar in it, you don’t have to add as much when making a sauce. Anyhow, BBQ sauce, however, is one of the loves of my life. I put it on whatever I don’t put hot sauce on, and that’s quite a bit! When a barbecue sauce is done right, it’s the perfect balance of sweet, tangy and spicy. A bold addition to any kind of dish you can think of. So as you can imagine, going keto meant no bbq sauce or taking a risk on a bbq sauce that had an aftertaste and probably cost me a MILLION DOLLARS!
Because my pockets are shallow and I don’t like to take the gamble on bad sauces on top of my food, I decided to make a sauce I could enjoy that was also keto friendly. I wanted something reminiscent of BBQ sauces I had made in the past. Something with enough body to stand up to bold, grilled flavors, but also familiar to go with things like my air fryer nuggets. I also knew I didn’t want to use sugar free ketchup because the ingredient list was not friendly and if I had any leftover, I DEFINITELY wasn’t going to use it. Ew! Lol. So I looked through the pantry and I had a can of no sugar added tomato sauce. I knew that was the move. To ensure I got some thickness, I also grabbed some tomato paste that also had no sugar added and my typical spices for barbecue sauce. Instead of using any sweetner I’d normally use, like brown sugar, honey or molasses, I grabbed my monkfruit sweetener and Swerve Brown to add some sweetness to the sauce. Lo and behold, sugar free, fully keto bbq sauce without any artificial ingredients or coloring, and absolutely NO aftertaste!
I’m so happy to share this recipe with you all, especially my BBQ sauce lovers like me. Typically a serving size of sauce is 1 tablespoon (tuh!), but my recipe is 2 full tablespoons of goodness for under 2g carbs! That’s just the right amount for like 5 chicken nuggets. Risk another 2 for 10 nuggs, lol. Now how can you not make this sauce!? Before I post the recipe, I want to drop a few helpful hints that will help you should you run into any hangups along the way :
- The texture of the tomato sauce will influence the final texture of your bbq sauce. If you like completely smooth sauce, I’d go with a very blended tomato sauce to begin with.
- The longer you cook your barbecue sauce, the thicker it will become. However, too long and you can burn it. Be sure to keep an eye on it between 20-30 mins.
- To get your sauce even smoother, you can run it through a fine mesh sieve or in a high powered blender.
- Store in an air tight container in the fridge to keep. Will keep for 2 weeks! Reheat gently on the stove or in 10s intervals in the microwave.
What’s your favorite condiment to put on everything?
