So we’re stuck inside during this time and your typical Mother’s Day plans are canceled, huh? The spa, a restaurant, a getaway; all of it, shut down! So what do you do? You make the best of a bad situation and give mom the best Mother’s Day ever, all within your home (or close by,…

So we’re stuck inside during this time and your typical Mother’s Day plans are canceled, huh? The spa, a restaurant, a getaway; all of it, shut down! So what do you do? You make the best of a bad situation and give mom the best Mother’s Day ever, all within your home (or close by, with proper social distancing, of course)! “But Nik, every mom is different, how can you tell me what to do for *MY* Mom?!” I hear you, and you’re not wrong. That’s why I’ve broken this down by different personality types and an idea for that style. Believe me, I GOT YOU!!

Before I get into the details of what you can do for your Mama, let me tell you about mine! My mother’s name is Glenda and many people refer to her as “Sweet” Glenda. She is one of the most selfless people you’ll ever meet and also one of the most hard working. She’s been a great example of a family matriarch and what it means to forgive and even what sacrifice looks like. She’s super artsy and creative, but also very diligent and matter-of-factly. I get a LOT of traits from her. One thing she is that I am definitely not is low maintenance. She’s not the type to let you get her a spa day and it’s hard for her to allow you to make her the center of attention at all. So for her, something low-key works great! She really is the best and because Mother’s Day is the only day she allows me to do for her…I’m gonna take advantage of that! Now lets get into these ideas!

THE WINE & COCKTAIL CONNOISSEUR:

IF YOUR THE MOM IN YOUR LIFE IS ANYTHING LIKE MINE, SHE HAS A FULLY STOCKED BAR AT HOME AND CAN MAKE A MEAN DRINK. SHE ALWAYS ORDERS A DRINK AT DINNER AND MEMORIZES THE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE IT AT HOME. FOR THIS MAMA, I HAVE TWO SUGGESTIONS FOR YOU:

  • At Home Wine Tasting: For this idea, you will need to make two stops: The grocery and the wine store. At the grocery, get a range of things including chocolate, nuts, charcuterie and cheese. This will be to pair with your wines. At the wine store, pick 4-6 wines, with a mix of red, white and rose, ranging from dry to sweet. Once you have everything, set up your tasting and take some notes on the wine and why it works with the foods. It will be a great experience for your Mom. Get extra fancy by picking a theme, such as all Napa Valley or South American wines. For a guide on food and wine pairings, check out these food and wine paring basics
  • Home Cocktail Class: For this idea, you will need to pick a cocktail class and buy the ingredients to go along. There are some free resources, like Drink This Tonight’s YouTube channel which provides recipes and drinks at every skill level. There’s also dedicated, themed classes by sources like Happied that give you the ingredient list to do a live bartending class for 2 drinks. Others can join and you can have a blast getting tipsy together!
THE FOOD ENTHUSIAST:

FOR THE MOM WHO LOVES EVERYTHING ABOUT FOOD, WHETHER IT’S TRYING A NEW RESTAURANT OR RECIPE, CENTERING HER SPECIAL DAY AROUND A MEAL WILL BE THE THING THAT MAKES HER FEEL SUPER SPECIAL! WHETHER SHE ENJOYS COOKING OR LOVES TO EAT OUT TO TRY NEW FOODS, THERE’S AN IDEA FOR HER:

  • Create An At Home Restaurant: Think about the best dishes she has talked about most or the type of cuisine she enjoys and go from there. Here you have the opportunity to either find a good recipe or order in from a restaurant. If you want to make it really special, order her favorite appetizer, main and dessert from the various restaurants they come from. She’ll be both wowed and honored that you took the time to do this. For the cherry on top, create a printable menu and set up the table to be a real restaurant experience!
  • Take a Online Cooking Class: There are a ton of online cooking classes that are available for the Mom who loves to cook. If she has a favorite cuisine, take a look at places like The Kitchn and America’s Test Kitchen who have a variety of cuisines. If she loves a particular chef, check out Masterclass , where you can choose a chef to follow (Gordon Ramsay anyone!?). You can also check out YouTube where a bunch of chef’s do free cooking videos. Just make sure to get the ingredients for her or a gift card to the grocery to pick them up when she’s ready to make it!
THE (RIGHTFULLY SO) DIVA:

DOES THE MOM IN YOUR LIFE DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE THE QUEEN SHE IS AND ENJOY THAT TYPE OF TREATMENT? WELL, THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO SHINE! BY GIVING YOUR MOM A DAY OF PAMPERING AND TAKING ON TASKS TO ALLEVIATE HER LOAD, YOU WILL WIN THE DAY!

  • Don’t Lift A Finger: For the Mom that just needs to take a break and relax, this is the chance to allow her to do that. Bringing her breakfast in bed, giving her a robe and some items to have a deluxe bubble bath and facial and even a little aroma therapy to set the mood would be awesome. Create a playlist of some relaxing Mom jams (Anita Baker) and drop off a basket with her favorite snacks and just let her be without the requests of others to enjoy HER day!
  • Let Me Do That: Has your Mom been talking about something that she just wants to do or get done but hasn’t gotten the time to do it. Do you have the ability to do it? Well, ok then! Whether it’s organizing the pantry or cleaning out the garage, take the initiative to handle little projects and tasks for her. She will love that you took the initiative, even if she has to reorganize a little to make it *just* right.
THE DIY OBSESSED:

Is your Mom always creating something from nothing? Constant trips to stores to get materials for a new home or other projects? If so, you can definitely help her get her creative juices flowing. Think about some areas or projects she’s mentioned and then do a quick Pinterest search to gather some ideas in a book for her. Better yet, if she has a Pinterest (she probably DEFINITELY DOES), take a look at those and put them in a book for her. Then check out some costs for it all and get a gift card to  Home depot or Lowe’s and tape it right in the book with a sentimental note from you about how great her DIY projects always turn out. Trust me, she’ll love it! As a bonus, if she has done projects and taken pictures of them or if you can, add those in the book as her completed projects, include before and afters if you can!

These are some of my top ideas for giving the Mom in your life the best Mother’s Day, considering the circumstances. It’s a tough time for everyone, but you can make things a little bit easier by letting a very special person in your life know that they are loved and thought of.

What other ideas do you have for making the best of an indoor Mother’s Day?
